Abstract
The foreign body lodged in the retropharyngeal space is very rare and there have been only two reports of such cases since 1950.
Crammer reported a case with a 50-mm-long nail embedded in the retropharyngeal space for 54 years and Ittkin reported a case witha chicken bone embedded in the retropharyngeal space for 3 days, Both patients were treated successfully by intraoral approach.
The present communication is concerned with one such case seen by us at the Department of Otolaryngology, St, Mary¢¥ s Hospital, Catholic Medical College,
The patient was a 51-year-old male who came to our department 3 days after he had mis-swallowed a sewing needle on February 2, 1964. At first, removal of the needle was attempted the endoscopic method under the local anesthesia. However, this trial was terminated without success, and the needle was removed by the right lateral cervical incision under the general anesthesia. The removed needle measured 43 mm in length.
